About us
Color is our passion!
Mandy Shoger is a potter by trade! She is the artist behind Foxtail Pottery.
She started growing her own flowers because she needed fresh flowers to display with her handmade vases.
After growing almost every kind of cut flower that she could, she became obsessed with the color palette that the dahlia world offers to artists and designers!
She quickly became obsessed with collecting her favorite dahlia colors and forms, and is always scouting new varieties to collect and share with you!
Dahlias grown in the heart of the Methow Valley ~ Twisp WA
We are tucked in the eastern foothills of the North Cascade Mountains of Washington state.
Unlike the west side of the mountains, our climate can be harsh, with winters down to -20 degrees with 3-4 feet of snow, and hot, dry summers sometimes topping 110 degrees. Our growing season is from late May to early October. Zone 5.
It can be a harsh environment for dahlias, but Mandy is passionate about growing them, and we use plenty of organic nutrients, compost from our duck coop, irrigation and sometimes shade cloth to help ensure our flowers have what it takes to thrive!
Organic Methods used when possible.
We try to avoid using synthetic fertilizer ingredients and source organic materials when possible. We use lots of our own compost from our duck coop, with additional quality compost sourced from BCS Livestock sheep farm. We also avoid spraying harsh pesticides in the garden.
A focus on Hybridizers
Mandy is really interested in the people behind each dahlia cultivar, and she loves to take note of the stories and history behind each bloom.
Look under each listing to read more about the hybridizers and learn more about their stories and locations!
She is also looking into voluntarily contributing some of the profits of her sales back towards the hybridizers, in support of the years of work and dedication they put in.
Healthy soil, healthy plants
We focus on feeding the microbiome of the soil, using no-till methods and feeding the beneficial bacteria and fungi to nourish the underground web of nutrients that bring us our abundance of blooms.
This is why we avoid using harsh pesticides and sometimes bring in beneficial insects to help combat pests like mites.
From our family to yours.
Nate, Mandy, dogs Charlie and Penny, cats Piper and Arya, and our herd of 17 ducks all work together to bring you the best tubers and cuttings!
